once more into the breach . . .

Posted on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 in Rants

A little over a month ago I walked away from Facebook. We loved and then we fought and then we loved again and the vicious cycle wouldn’t stop. I would leave for a couple of days but the emails would keep coming, violently begging me to pay more attention to the seven hundred friends I had appropriated as if cyber friends were the currency of the new world. And I would eventually, out of some sick sense of longing, march back online, log in and lose more hours of my already dwindling life to scanning status updates and uploading photos that apparently then belong to some billionaire in silicon valley. Over the course of a particularly strange and soul searching couple of pilot season weeks I decided to finally say my final goodbye and deactivate the account and sink my social networking ship for the last time. Within minutes I started receiving terrified texts (the second tier of  non social communication in the new world) wondering what had happened to me and if I was okay. I was touched that people cared and worried that ones dismissing of the whole tiresome world of online socializing was cause for any concern. I got a few emails (third tier) saying congratulations for getting out. Those made it hurt a little less. I still miss the book and know they are keeping my account warm for me should I wish to make amends one day. But for now we are just better without each other.

Of course the whole time I was going through this 21st century crisis, I was secretly building and commissioning what I really wanted and what facebook could never quiet give me. I had torn down my initial photo blog a few months ago in a similar frustrated techno fit and decided that I wanted a place to call home on the internet. I didn’t want a fully furnished apartment in HTMLand but a perfect blank canvas of a place that’s FLASHy, but more importantly, suited to my needs. And so the photo section is vastly improved, there is an added actor portion which for now is reserved for industry folks who need to glance at video and shots, and there is this quiet little corner where I can write what I like and own every word of it. Will anyone listen? Not really the point. Not entirely beside the point either. I guess I’m just swapping out one public, digital, online entity for another. It’s like buying a new suit.

I hope you like the new site and have no trouble navigating it. Its our initial launch of it and I would really like to thank Brian Bedard for his immense amount of work on this. He is a god among men and his command over the internet is at once inspiring and scary.

So once more into the breach. I will try and keep this one alive and for all of you who really kindly expressed, not concern, but remorse that my photos weren’t accessible anymore. Here they are. There are many more to come.

So, maybe I am just technologically challenged but I can not seem to find your photography. This saddens me, almost as much as your journey out of facebook land. We never got the chance to indulge in that friendship: ) Patrick J. Adams, I have to tell you that you are a very talented individual. I have seen some of your photography..brilliant and you also seem to have a gift with words. Just wanted to say hey and see what you have been up to since filming and congratulate you on your big upcoming premiere! Yay Waterhole! Good stuff! Talk soon! Hope all is well as you continue to trek against the ever distant world of technology!

    pjamas,

so glad you found a home on the web that suits u best.
how true that facebook can be such a tangled mess.
this site really puts your cyberfriends to the test.
will they still visit when it can’t be seen by all the rest?
why does it matter in the end anyway if you’re happier like this no need to rhyme
i think it looks amazing and your blog takes the cake! how’s that for tradition
i used a cliche. the irony being, of course, that you are anything but…

    Bravo, Patrick!

I, too, vacated Facebook (months ago) for many of the same reasons as you. Welcome to your new online home and I must say, it is sooooo much more an authentic expression of who you be and who you are becoming in the world.

May this space grow your dreams, expand your voice and share your original medicine with all of us.

    xxxo
