This Week in Nuclear Waste
Yesterday I was green. I was in it. Everything I kept hearing and seeing, despite the oncoming pandemic which will claim us all, were the signs of a green future. Hybrids everywhere, NPR did a story on the 40 million “Smart Meters” that will be installed in the coming year to help consumers curb personal excessive energy hoarding and the third dry cleaner in my area finally erected their own sign declaring their excellence in organic, environmentally friendly dry cleaning. I have no idea what that would involve but i want to be green dammit so sign me up! I had visions of our childrens world (barring swine apocalypse) where wind farms dot the landscape and affordable solar panels powering all of our economical, high yielding batteries, and cold fusion keeping us all warm in our low carbon footprint lives. And then this morning I wake to find this little article. I don’t want to ruin the surprise but it involves a certain Nuclear Commission and its innability or possibly total disinterest in halting the storage and disposal of some 20,000 tons of Italian nuclear waste. And in Utah non the less. I know we are all strapped for cash but is this the best we can do? The company is promising %50 of the revenue is to be donated to the state of Utah, a place already responsible for storing the wast of 36 other states! Now that my green bubble has been appropriately busted I’m going to get back to reality and try to figure out what hell environmentally friendly dry cleaning is other than a cheap pandering sign that pulls fools like me in.
