Solar Eclipse
Earlier today the longest solar eclipse of the century was visible to the whole other side of the world. We may not have had front row seats but a lot of excellent photographers did. Click above to link to some really beautiful pictures of a galactic event that plunges cities into darkness in the middle of the day. For those of us on this side of the world you can’t make travel plans that coincide with the lunar and solar orbits we will have to wait until August 21, 2017 to get a look at one. So be patient.
random act of wander: big sur
Why is it so difficult to let yourself go? I spend almost every waking moment trying to get somewhere without going anywhere . . . and then one day you realize you actually can just leave. that it costs almost nothing. and you can get in a car and go somewhere you’ve never been. You can avoid traffic. You can take side highways. You can climb bluffs. Sleep in hidden cabins. Camp. You can literally go anywhere you want anytime you want to and in doing so will kick that little kid in you that is sound asleep in the back seat, wake him up, and have him take the wheel for a little while. If you just say yes a little more, if you just stop thinking so much, you can find yourself in places you can’t imagine with people you can’t imagine. Big Sur swallowed me whole this past week and I thank it whole heartedly for keeping me firmly separated from my brain for a week. The ocean is a place for people of the heart. I didn’t think I would fit in. I’m so glad that I did.

Each blade of grass has its spot on earth whence it draws its life, its strength; and so is man rooted to the land from which he draws his faith together with his life.

Visions of Earth
National Geographic has a monthly selection of photos called Visions of Earth. This months photos are so beautiful that I had to pass them on to anyone and everyone who may be interested. I can’t imagine a more rewarding photography gig then traveling and shooting for a magazine that still so highly values and promotes the both the artistic and journalistic integrity of photography. Like photos of space, my secret obsession, this growing collection of photographs show us our world in a completely new and vibrant and, sometimes terrifying, way. Click the photo above for the link.
Best Animal Shots of the Year
National Geographic just posted their best wild animal shots of the year. They are incredible but unfortunately a little small. Click the picture above to check them out.

The photos from my one day and night at the Coachella Music Festival are posted in the site. Click above to check them out.
lights out and a link
Though it happened a while ago I just stumbled on these photos of Earth Hour around the world. Just click on each image to see the before and after. Just click on the photo above to check them out. And if you haven’t been to The Big Picture blog before I suggest checking it out as often as possible. It is a collection of some of the best photographs of major news stories around the globe straight from the separate organizations.
Oh, Coachella . . .

Yesterday I drove the 2 hours into the desert to fling myself around some polo fields in search of music, people, substance and silliness. I found them all. Leonard Cohen was the highlight of the night. His voice shooke the whole grounds and hearing 10,000 people sing Hallelujah was something special. The whole thing is easy to become cynical about as I have in other years . . . overpriced ATM’s, bored people with VIP wristbands lightly dangling from the wrist helping to hold up an overpriced margarita, the thin veil of drugs or drug lust dripping from everyones eyes. But this year i let go of all it and just enjoyed the crap out of being in the desert with a bunch of fools like myself. Oh and a dragon made of fire too – lets not forget him.
More pictures will be posted very soon on the site so check back in the next couple of days. And now maybe some rest? probably not.
